Fishing Report: May 31, 2014

Author: Bill Gibson, Langara Fishing Lodge Manager

The 2014 season at Langara Island has begun! We welcomed our first guests to Langara Fishing Lodge earlier this week, and Langara Island Lodge gets underway today.

We're entering this season with high expectations, as numerous fisheries forecasts have predicted very strong salmon returns all along the west coast in 2014.

So far, it's been a great start to the season. Dry skies and some brisk winds from the NW greeted us on the first two days of fishing, but the salmon and bait cooperated by staying close to the Cohoe Point and Andrews Point shoreline, along the east side of Langara, where anglers could fish in well-sheltered waters.

There is a lot of herring present right now, and most salmon are being caught on the shallow side from 10-20 pulls. Spurts of fish seem to be going through the Cohoe-Andrews area all day, but maybe a bit better on the flood tide.

Boulder Point has been holding salmon on the ebb tide. Guests have also found some nice incidental Halibut from Boulder and around the corner in Bruin Bay.

A 42.5 pound Chinook (above) just hit the docks this morning, giving guest Robert Yorke a great finish to his trip. Prior to that, the largest salmon, which was caught by the youngest angler at the lodge, was a 34.5 pounder found at Lacy Island on the flood. There was a couple of good flurries of salmon at Lacy yesterday and the weather was very nice all around the Island.

Humpback whales have been spotted in most areas but most often off the top of the Island the last few days.

Haida Gwaii Fishing Tournament

Our 24th Annual Haida Gwaii Tournament begins today at Langara Fishing Lodge, with 40 anglers competing for $185,000 in cash and prizes. That 42.5 pound salmon caught this morning is a good marker for what might be needed to win. We'll provide updates as the trip progresses.

All-in-all, we're firing on all cylinders here at Langara Island, with great fishing, wildlife and weather. Hope to see you soon.

"What a great trip"
Review Created On: Nov 03, 2017
Overall Rating:
This was a fantastic trip. The fishing was absolutely incredible, we went home with our limit of salmon, halibut, and rockfish. After a hard day of fishing the staff were very welcoming and the food was what you would see in a high end restaurant. I will defiantly be back sometime in the near future!

"Fisherman's Dream Come True "Langara Fishing Lodge""
Review Created On: Sep 25, 2017
Overall Rating:
Being used to roughing it on fishing trips, Langara was the total luxury 1st class experience for me. Everything from the accommodation, food (the pig roast was brilliant), boats and gear were all top notch. All the staff were excellent particularly our guide Matt who got us into some fantastic world class fishing fun. This is the place memories are made from and I'm glad I didn't pass up this opportunity with my buddy and his sons.

"Amazing is a New Normal re the Langara Fishing Lodge Experience"
Review Created On: Jun 13, 2016
Overall Rating:
I just returned from my seventh experience with the Egan/Husky fishing adventure. High seas and another amazing and unique experience is what I have learned to expect as a normal for this adventure. Anchored by wonderful customer service, Bill and Suze run a fine operation in this remote and wild environment unique in Canada. The scenery makes this vacation experience truly remarkable. It changes every trip and I am looking forward to my next opportunity to return to the Langara Fishing Lodge
