Predator's Pen - Saltwater Fishing Report - Jan 22nd, 2013

Over the past week, a large number of Chinook were located down by Porlier Pass and along Galiano Island! I have had reports from several different anglers who have managed to fish the area, and all have done VERY WELL. In fact, the action should be considered to be HOT in no uncertain terms, as one of these anglers managed to boat 9 legal fish (9 to 12 lbs) on one of the days. All others also boated several legal fish up to the 15 lb mark (though most of the fish have been in the 8 to 12 lb range).

I expect that these are of the same “run” of fish I tend to encounter off Thrasher Rock from late January through early March, so we will hopefully see them move up that way in the very near future. During some winters this is an excellent fishery, and of course we don’t have to contend with the crowds that often occur here during the May/June fishery.

Of course we need a relatively calm day in order to do a charter to the Gulf Islands, but that is actually more common in the winter months than you may think. Basically, most days without a big rain storm occurring tend to be quite calm (and who wants to fish during a winter rain storm anyway.....). The only other time we tend to have wind is when we get an abrupt weather change (like a rapid clearing after a stretch of rain). during the recent foggy stretch, Georgia St. was basically mirror smooth most days.....of course it may have been too hard to see your rod tips through the fog in order to watch for a strike.....

In our local waters, the mouth of the Capilano has continued to produce fish on a regular basis, but heavy angler pressure during the past weeks has tended to slow the action (especially on the weekends). In Howe Sound, the action continues to be spotty, but the fish that are getting taken are a very nice size, and the fish you do hook is just as likely to be in the 15 to 20 lb range as it is the typical 8 to 12 lb range of winter fish.

Of course booking a few days ahead for an extended trip to the Gulf Islands can be risky due to the unknown weather factor, but I have no problem cancelling or postponing a Gulf Island trip if the wind doesn’t cooperate on the day you initially picked. Also, remember that a Gulf Island trip needs to be longer than the minimum 5 hour charter due to the longer running time (a.k.a. fuel burn) to get to these fishing locations.

I put my prawn traps out again at this time of year, so they are a great addition to any Chinook we catch.

I had the pleasure of fishing with David Korsch during a very tough fishing period due to a lack of rain flooding the rivers. No rain, little salmon movement but using his experience, skills and willingness to go the extra mile to try everything from trolling to jigging to casting we managed to catch one 22 lb chum salmon, one 9 lb wild coho salmon and one salmon shark. When all other boats went home skunked...we saw some action and great conversation! Thanks a bunch David and I hope it start
